Make a commitment to volunteer.
The act of volunteering means commitment. As a volunteer it is expected that you will commit to all the parameters of the program. This could mean volunteering up to 4 hours per week or as little as a few hours a month.

Follow these steps to apply
1. Fill out a Volunteer Application Form.
2. Attend a meeting that NAMI sets up upon receiving your application.  
3. List your references in your application and NAMI will verify them.

VOLUNTEER AGREEMENT AND CONFIDENTIALITY STATEMENT

I understand that I am applying to be an unpaid volunteer for NAMI Southern Arizona and that this application is not an application for employment. I understand that as a volunteer, I will help to the best of my ability in accordance with the policies of the organization and will maintain complete confidentiality concerning all the information about daily interactions with people served through NAMI. I further understand that submission of a completed application along with an interview by NAMI Southern Arizona does not obligate me to accept, or NAMI Souther Arizona to assign, a volunteer opportunity. I also understand and agree that, to the fullest extent permitted by law, I will not hold NAMI Southern Arizona responsible for any claims, demands, damages or losses resulting from my volunteer activities with the organization, including any injurty or property loss associated with use of my personal motor vehicle. I certify that the above information is accurate and I give NAMI Southern Arizona my persmission to verify this information. NAMI Southern Arizona retains the right of refusal of acceptance and this application does not ensure that volunteer placement will be made.

Confidentiality Statement

I shall protect the privacy concerns of the people we service, and I shall hold in confidence all information obtained in the course of professoinal service, whether that information is obtained through written records or daily interaction with the person. Therefore, I will not disclose an individual's confidences to anyone, accept:

1. As mandated by law
2. To prevent a clear and immediate danger to a person or persons.
3. Where I am compelled to do so by a court or pursuant to the rules of the court.

I shall possess a professional attitude, which upholds confidentiality towards the people we serve, colleagues, applicants and any sensitive situations arising within the non-profit.
I, upon leaving the organization, shall maintain client and co-worker confidentiality and I shall hold confidential any information about sensitive situations within this non-profit organization.

NAMI Volunteer Opportunities

  • Answer phones and direct callers 1/2 day (4 hours) per week or on-call.
  • Provide administrative support to the staff.
  • Help with copying materials for classes and outreach.

We are in need of bilingual volunteers (English/Spanish) as several of our programs and classes are offered in both languages. We also need bilingual Receptionists and Resource Specialists. 

  • Education Committee -Join and share your experiences with outside groups (churches, schools, etc.), must have a connection with mental illness, either in yourself, a family member or friend.
  • Peer-to-Peer mentor training– after completion of the 18-hour Peer-to Peer educational program. Must be a person living with mental illness.
  • Peer Support Specialist training-after completion of the 18-hour Peer-to Peer educational program and Peer Mentor training.
  • Family-to-Family instructor training-must be a graduate of the 30 hour Family-to Family course.
  • “Ending the Silence” student presenter training.  You must be a person 18- 35 and have a connection with mental illness, either in yourself, a family member or friend.
  • “Ending the Silence” staff presenter training.  Lead Presenter focuses on helping school professionals better understand the early warning signs of mental illness in youth. 
  • “In Our Own Voice” presenter training.- you must be a person living with mental illness.
  • NAMI Basics teacher training – an education program for parents of a child with mental illness.

Be a support group facilitator for NAMI Connection (a group for people living with a mental illness) or a Family Support Group. In general, support groups meet once per month for 1 1/2 hours. Training is provided and a two-year time commitment is required.

Heart-to-Heart is an organization of volunteers who are dedicated to helping people with serious mental illness live fuller, happier lives. This program bridges the gap between the community at large and the population of people living with a mental illness, who might otherwise find themselves on the outskirts of society, forgotten and lonely.
